"Crying" tomatoes?

stressed plants emit ultra-sonic clicks

Some scientists like to explore the areas beyond our senses. There are “colours” in the ultraviolet region which some other animals and insects can see, but we can’t. There are also sounds such as ultrasonics which are too high for us to hear or too low.

Quite some time ago botanists found that tomato plants emit ultrasonic clicks when they are stressed because they don’t have enough water, or because they have been cut. If the plant is stressed the clicks are emitted at about one burst a minute, but if unstressed about one burst an hour. This appears to be a kind of signal, “Please water me!”

Small animals can hear these sounds too, but we don’t yet know if they respond to them. Perhaps the sounds are a signal that the plant is injured or vulnerable, so attracting browsing or grazing animals.

Later research particularly in Israel, shows that other plants also emit ultrasonic clicks - including tobacco, corn and wheat.

So, one can imagine a whole field of plants crying out to God for water. Does he respond?
